วันที่ 12 มิถุนายน ค.ศ.2015 เว็บไซต์องค์การยา สหภาพยุโรป (European Medicines Agency หรือ EMA) เผยแพร่ข้อมูลว่าขณะนี้กำลังเริ่มทบทวนการใช้ยาในกลุ่ม SGLT2 inhibitors ซึ่งเป็นยาสำหรับผู้ป่วยเบาหวานชนิดที่ 2 ประกอบด้วยยา canagliflozin, dapagliflozin และ empagliflozin เพราะต้องการประเมินความเสี่ยงของยาเหล่านี้กับความเสี่ยงในการทำให้เกิดภาวะเลือดเป็นกรดจากคีโตนในผู้ป่วยเบาหวาน (diabetic ketoacidosis) ภายใต้การร้องขอตามมาตรา 20 แห่ง Regulation (EC) No 726/2004 เนื่องจากเมื่อวันที่ 19 พฤษภาคม ค.ศ.2015 EudraVigilance ซึ่งเป็นเครือข่ายเฝ้าระวังอาการไม่พึงประสงค์จากการใช้ยา แห่งสหภาพยุโรป ได้รับรายงานจากทั่วโลกว่าผู้ป่วยที่ใช้ยาในกลุ่ม SGLT2 inhibitors ส่วนหนึ่ง จำนวน 101 ราย เกิดภาวะเลือดเป็นกรดจากคีโตน (จากผู้ป่วยประมาณครึ่งล้านรายซึ่งได้รับยาเหล่านี้เป็นเวลา 1 ปี)
Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors (หรือ SGLT2 inhibitors) เป็นยาที่ยับยั้งโปรตีนในไตที่ชื่อว่า SGLT2 ซึ่งโปรตีน SGLT2 นี้ทำหน้าที่ดูดน้ำตาลในปัสสาวะกลับเข้ากระแสเลือด การยับยั้งการทำงานจะสามารถทำให้กำจัดน้ำตาลทางปัสสาวะได้มากขึ้นและลดระดับน้ำตาลในเลือดได้ (ยาในกลุ่มนี้ไม่ได้รับรองให้ใช้ในผู้ป่วยเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1)
อาการที่เกิดขึ้นจากภาวะเลือดเป็นกรดจากคีโตนในผู้ป่วยเบาหวาน (diabetic ketoacidosis) เช่น คลื่นไส้, อาเจียน, anorexia, ปวดท้อง, กระหายน้ำผิดปกติ, หายใจลำบาก, สับสน, เมื่อล้าหรือหลับผิดปกติ
